Inadvertant oropharyngeal injury is not uncommon problem in the pediatric population. Also minor oropharyngeal traumas have been associated with severe complications depending on their injury site. A retrospective review of 45 oropharyngeal
injury
patients from 1988 to 1993 at Kwangju Christian Hospital was undertaken for the analysis of injury site, mechanism, and distribution of sex, age. Sex ratio of male to female was 2:1. The most common site of injury was supratonsillar region (53%).
The
age of patient was varied from 4 months to 8 years old, with the average of 2.7 years old (majorities were below 4 years old). Causing materials were plastic toy (15 cases) and wood stick (14 cases), spoon (3 cases), chopstick (3 cases) and hair
pin (2
cases) etc. None of the patients developed severe complication. (Korean J Otolaryngol 38:3, 1995)
